China has refused permission to Nobel Peace Prize-winning author Liu Xiaobo to travel abroad for cancer treatment. He has been diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer.

The 61-year-old Nobel is serving an 11-year sentence for having conducted pro-democracy protests. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, while still in jail, for conducting non-violent protests to improve the human rights situation in China.

After his supporters alleged that he was not given sufficient medical aid, the Chinese government announced that Liu was being given the best medical care possible and had both renowned doctors and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners working on his case.

A video was released showing the excellent conditions the author was living in; his wife stayed with him.

When the US ambassador proposed treatment abroad for the author, the Chinese government said that he was too sick to travel and that the country would take care of its citizens.
